Luna,
Well I too attended a bartending school. I graduated about 6 months ago.
When I first graduated I was under the impression that I would hit the ground
running...boy was I wrong! After going to about 5 interviews I realized that
most employers do want experience. After realizing this I wanted to at least
get behind a bar. I went to a club I knew was hot in the past but had fell
off a little recently and applied for a bartending position. The manager said
that currently they weren't in need of any bartenders but they could use
another bar-back. I decided to take the job knowing that when business picked
back up I would be first in line for a bartender spot. Well all the skills I
learned from school payed off as a bar-back, and all the bartenders loved me.
After only about a month or two of barbacking I was getting "fill in" spots
for others who didn't show up for work. I proved my worth as a good bartender
and after only a few more weeks of that. I now have three shifts a week
behind the main bar and am loving life. The lesson is just go in with an open
mind and prove that your worthy of the bartending job. I was the #1 student
in the history of the bartending school I went to (speed and product
knowledge), but I swallowed my pride and now am as happy as can be. Sorry for
this being so long.
