You are basically right. Yeast chemically changes sugars into alcohol, this
is called fermentation. Wine is the easiest alcohol to make. It is as easy as
mixing some fruit, sugar, yeast, and water and letting it do it's own thing at
the right temperature. Then draining off the wine. There is alot more to it
than that, check out this web site. http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/index.asp
Here is a site that supplies everything you might need to make wine.
http://www.nbrewer.com/
I remember a friends dad used to make grape juice wine. He bought grape juice
in a glass container added alittle sugar and yeast, slipped a baloon over the
neck and let it brew. When the baloon stopped getting bigger the wine was done.
To make stronger alcohol you need to distill the mixture. The mixture used to
do this isn't anything like the wine mentioned above. Check out this site for
a moonshine recipe. http://www.ibiblio.org/moonshine/make/howtomake.html
Heating this mixture to the right temp. will make the alcohol seperate from
the mash, the tricky part is catching the vapors from the pot. Alcohol boils
before water, this is why this is possible. Home made moonshine causes alot
of health problems if not done correctly. There is only a few countries that
let you distill your own alcohol, I believe New Zealand is one of them. I can
tell you now, the stuff at the bar tastes a hole lot better than anything you
can make.
