I do not have a detailed definition, but I am betting schnapps originated in 
Germany.  I believe it's German, or from a German root, meaning a "mouth full."

American schnapps is a liqueur that is low in proof and high in sugar.  
European Schnapps is a liqueur that is high in proof and low in sugar.
