I do not have a detailed definition, but I am betting schnapps originated in Germany. I believe it's German, or from a German root, meaning a "mouth full." American schnapps is a liqueur that is low in proof and high in sugar. European Schnapps is a liqueur that is high in proof and low in sugar.
