Here's the version a mexican friend told me: In former times the capsules 
(hope this is the right word in English for the metal "things" that close the 
beer bottles... sorry!), so, these capsules were of such bad quality that 
sometimes they started to rust. And as some of the rust stood on the bottle 
after opening it, a piece of a lime was given to the customer to clean it. If 
this story is true, it means that it would be complete nonsens to put the lime 
into the bottle, and ,of course, that the use of lime/lemon is not necessary 
anymore.
