I ususlly don't post to correct someones spelling, but I will in this
case.  :-)
It's the peristaltic movement, as you put it.  (no disrespect intended)

Anyways, I used to get hiccups when I drank and had all of the "remedies" 
thrown at me.  I found that most of the remedies had something to do with 
altering the normal debth of breath. By drinking water or eating something 
that "takes your breath away".  I realized if I concentrated on my diaphram 
muscle and took long, controlled deep breaths and let them out slowly my 
hiccups went away. It's a spasm in the diaphram muscle that makes you hiccup.  
I guess, just add this to an already long list of remedies.
