Hey all, I appreciate u all for taking ur time and reading my post. I just found this site few days ago and I gotta tell ya, it's pretty damn informative and amazing. i got intersted in bartending when volunteering at a food bank, served drinks and enjoyed it alot. So I thought if i can get doing something similar and get PAID it'd be even more delightfully fun. So then I took a bartending course and learned some basic stuff. ...

It's funny because here in Mexico, Tequila won't come with the built-in pourer, even the expensive stuff, but every bottle of Vodka, Rum, Gin, Whiskey, Scotch and even some of the thinner Liqueurs have it - and it's annoying as hell!

What is Your Favorite Liquor???

Im just curious to see what everyones favorite type of liquor is. Most people i know like Vodka or Whiskey the most. But this should be interesting to see what the bartenders like most (they tend to know better!!) :) :) Well i guess i'll start. Favorite: ...

Lol, i found this story really funny because i had the exact same problem, except the other way around. I was in Mexico when i purchased a bottle of DJ that didnt come w/ the pourer on it. I was pretty upset (thinking the bottle had been tampered with) and demanded a new bottle. The clerk just looked at me crazy and refunded my money... this process repeated three times before I realized I wasn't in Florida anymore. ...

Re: Freezing Gin or Vodka

Alot of people do keep it in the freezer just because its convenient to be able to pour straight from bottle to glass w/ no chilling in between. Personally, I dont like doing that because you don't open up the bouquet in the liquor as you do when you stir or shake it. It also tends to lack the texture i like ...

UPDATE

Sampled some of their filtered varieties today... I'm not as impressed. They're good, clean vodkas, with a relatively low burn, but I just love the unfiltered version the best. As for my questions... it is made with 100% potatoes, it's going to cost around $40-$45 per liter.

Freezing Gin or Vodka

I've heard that you should keep your gin and vodka in the freezer if you plan on making martinis. I know they are supposed to be chilled drinks, but this seems unusual. Thoughts?

Mmmm. Gin. I sometimes feel like gin is the redheaded step-child of the liquors. That is just sad. It's plenty tasty (well, the good ones anyway), it doesn't deserve to be in pushy vodka's shadow. That said here are a few simple, tasty gin based drinks that most bars can handle. ...

NEW: Long Island Vodka Debut (and objective tasting notes)

A new vodka is coming out - the first distilled and bottled on Long Island from Long Island potatoes (apparently among other ingredients - I will be clearing this up tomorrow when I meet with the owners). I came into this bottle by way of my restaurant - we will be hosting their debut and I will be creating a specialty cocktail to be served throughout the event, which will coincide with a fashion show. ...

Re: Want to become a bartender

Don't be a busser, start as a server if you have absolutely no prior experience in the service industry. Learning to deal with people will be a big challenge for you i think.
Blending Tips?

I had my first frozen/blended drink about six months ago. The drink made for me was quite the odd one, it was a Blue Revv cooler and a Smirnoff Ice cooler blended with ice. I thought it was quite good, but when I attempted it myself, it failed miserably. The drinks had slush floating on top with liquid on the bottom and were watered down beyond belief. ...

Re: Want to become a bartender

Josh is right. Server is a step closer to bartender than busser is. Busser is looked at as only food. Server deals with food and drink. Barback is even closer. Barbacks are hired for high-volume bars. Cocktail server is a great option too. But know that you'll still have to serve food. It's the step above server with one more step to be bartender. And just because you're a bartender doesn't mean you're not gonna be serving food because you'll sell tons. ...

Being a bartender is like being a server plus a load of additional responsibilities to boot. If you can't hack it being a server, you certainly won't hack it being a bartender.
